Infant Tongue Tie Assessment
A pediatric physiotherapy infant tongue tie assessment evaluates how tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) affects an infant’s ability to feed, suck, swallow, and develop oral function. Tongue-tie occurs when the lingual frenulum (the tissue under the tongue) is too tight, short, or thick, restricting movement. Early assessment and intervention can prevent feeding difficulties, support weight gain, and promote healthy oral development. Our pediatric physiotherapists play a key role in optimizing oral function for successful feeding.

What Does the Assessment Include?
-
Case History: Reviewing birth history, specific feeding difficulties, and relevant infant and maternal factors.
-
Feeding Observation: Assessing latching, suction, and movements of the lips, jaw, and cheeks during feeding.
-
Oral Motor Examination: Evaluating tongue mobility, range of motion, and muscle tension.
Treatment & Management Strategies
-
Oral exercises to improve tongue movement and strength.
-
Suck training, including deep latch techniques and tongue stretches.
-
Parental education on feeding positions and modifications.
-
Referral to specialists, such as lactation consultants, pediatric dentists, or ENT specialists, for further assessment or frenotomy if needed.
